2009 Isles of Newport IOM Classic – 26th April

Eighteen skippers nominated for the event this year which for the first time was run as a scratch event as in recent years there has been reduced interest in handicap racing in our Club.

Infortunately on the day only eleven turned up which was disappointing but those that did enjoyed great sailing conditions in the mainly westerly breeze which gradually moved to the northeast and freshened during the day. A rigs prevailed however all day.

PRO Ian Ashe had things under way on time at 0930 with nine boats facing the start as John White after making the trip from the Gold Coast suffered winch problems and Bill Butler was a little late in arriving.

Peter Morris sailing his Topico was quickly into stride with two wins and a couple of seconds with Bill Clancy also showing that his Mad Max was no slouch and consistently put together good performances all day.

Others to show form at times were Roger Taylor, Des Nelson and Graeme Turk each with three wins while racing was close all day. Micro Magic sailor Steve Andrews made the transition to IOM sailing thanks to Brian Lever who made his boat available while he is overseas.

After 24 races we called it a day, a little early with agreement from all skippers with the trophies taken by Peter Morris, Bill Clancy and Roger Taylor.
