IOM National Champion - 09

PERTH, WA. -- Wednesday, 14 January 2009
Last day of racing today, and the Doctor decided to take a day off. The sea-breeze never arrived at Champion Lakes today, resulting in frustration for officials and competitors alike. PRO Hub Bell and his Assistant Graeme Howie were working overtime, and the boat men spent the whole day on the water shifting marks.
There was a thrilling finish to the event. At the start of the day, Craig Smith held a 5 point lead over Paul Jones, with Jeff Byerley not far behind.
After 18 races, Paul had closed the gap to one point. After race 19, and the final drop came into play, Craig jumped out to a 4 point lead.
Racing was slow, and by 4.00pm, both C and B fleet of race 21 had been held, and there was only time for one more race. In an attempt to ensure that the last race was as fair as possible, Hub held the fleet until the wind looked as though it might co-operate.
There were 5 attempted starts, each time the wind would shift through 90 degrees during the countdown. At two minutes to 5pm, the final race got underway.
Paul Jones jumped to a substantial lead on the first windward leg, and was never headed. Craig Smith found himself mid-fleet, with a job on his hand.
Final positions at end of day 4
1st Craig Smith 48 points (on countback)
2nd Paul Jones 48 points
3rd Jeff Byerley 65 points
