The South Queensland 10R Championship – 2010 was sailed on Saturday 17th June at Emerald Lakes on the Gold Coast.  Paradise Radio Yacht Club was the host club.  Conditions ranged from light and variable breezes in the morning to a 10 to 12 k SE wind in the afternoon.  Eleven boats competed. Mark Paterson was a clear winner after 16 races on 13.8 points.  Racing for 2nd and 3rd places was very close with Ron Hoskins taking out 2nd place on 40 points from Tom Butler on 40.3 points.  The Club’s thanks go to Bill Clancy, PRO and David Black, scorer for their contributions in making this a very successful event.

Queensland EC12 State Titles - 26/27th June

Well, what an excellent weekends sailing. Challenging weather patterns and some really tight racing in a ONE DESIGN class with plenty to offer, what else could you want.

Racing was conducted on Lake Kawana and was shown once again to be an outstanding venue.

Ian Ash as PRO and David Black scoring were, as always, faultless and ran the whole weekend professionally, (even in trying conditions),with the backup of Terry Smith, Gary McMahon and Arthur from club Kawana YC.

It was bad luck to lose David Hill from the starting  line up after all the preliminary work he put in, and, without Peter Morris’s enthusiasm to push the class, and the help of Clyde Rogers, the regatta would not have been possible.

It was great to see Bob Stevenson up from a cold Canberra to compete in the sunshine, and the two Ken’s, Smith and Clark from Brisbane.  As always I looked forward to sailing with Yeoman Sands, down from Bundy, to push us all along.  The regatta also welcomed a new sailor to the class, Ed Mian in a beautifully restored red Sorenson.

The racing over the two days was held in light and variable A rig weather.  The quality of the local competitors was apparent and reflected the advantage of a few keen sailors constantly pushing each other every second weekend.

A milestone was reached with a different name on top of the leader board, albeit it was another Morris but in a Mini Mariner not a Sorenson.  Geoff sailed a very good regatta and thoroughly deserved his win.  Pete was fast but found a few corners to ‘park’ in at times.  Clyde sailed a very good regatta and pushed the top two all the way.

Although the fleet was small the quality of the boats and the racing was exceptional, and I think all participants enjoyed their time racing on Lake Kawana.

There seems to be a lot of interest in the class in SE Queensland with numbers anticipated to increase in the near future.  Hopefully this will transfer to NSW with a few bright spots beginning to appear.  So dust off those old boats, update them and get into some first class one design racing.

Queensland Marblehead Championship 2010

Eight Entries, Five from Qld and three from NSW who made the championship.

Day 1
Light conditions early from the SE building a little during the morning before finally fading away with racing abandoned at 1500, hoping for better conditions tomorrow. Tom Butler leads from Mark Benneke and Col Cameron.

Day 2
Difficult light conditions again today with the breeze initially from the south west swinging south and eventually south east making setting courses difficult and a real test of eyesight for skippers as the outer mark for the southerly was directly away from the control position.

The skippers handled the conditions well which was a credit to them.

Local skipper Tom Butler through very consistent sailing throughout the weekend came out a comfortable winner from Phil Page (Central Coast NSW) second just shading out Hervey Bay's Mark Beneke in third.

Stephen Tyler won the PRO's prize.

Thanks to our committee Ian Gilmour, Ian Ashe, Warren Mitchell supported by John McLachlan and Jon Wilson on the first day for their efforts in conducting the weekend.
